Foundations For The Future | KBC’s 150 Year Anniversary Book

In 2023, Kadant Black Clawson (KBC) celebrated their 150th year anniversary in Fiber Processing. To honor this success, we created an informative timeline picture book displaying significant points in history that led to KBC’s accomplishments today.

The book is split into three 50 year increments, divided with short stories, fun images, earlier product versions, and future products. It acts as a chronological picture book while also being an informative read.

Who is KBC?

Kadant Black Clawson LLC (KBC) is an industry-leading fiber processing equipment supplier that provides innovative solutions for stock pulp preparation, including wastepaper recycling, deinking, virgin fiber, and paper machine approach-flow applications.

Located in Lebanon, Ohio, they deliver the design, manufacture, and service of complete systems for pulping, detrashing, cleaning, screening, and other fiber processes based on the client’s requirements for quality, energy efficiency, and maximum fiber recovery.

Our team had to dig deep into over 150 years of company history to piece together a clear and accurate timeline. This meant tracking down old records, archived documents, and scattered bits of information from different departments and sources.

CONCEPT EXPLORATION

When we first started this book, we didn’t know exactly what would fill it’s pages other than KBC’s company history. Our first ideas included having something interactive between the book and its reader.

LAYOUTS & STYLE SKETCHES

Once we knew a little bit more about content, we began creating ideas on a style, grid system, timeline format, and overall look and feel.

PAGE BREAKDOWN - SKETCH TO PRINT

This is what the process looked like for every layout I was apart of. This one in particular required photographic documentation, scanning of information, and a great search for historical images from the 1800s. All these pieces were crafted into the beginning story of what KBC is today.

COLOR STUDIES

We ran into an issue involving whether there was a clear indication between chapters and what that indication should be. The decision was to signal the beginning of a section by a color, while also assigning the right tone for each time period.

Our Team

I got to work alongside Marketing Coordinator Jenna Bertke, and Marketing Manager Peter Alexander who art-directed me throughout the whole process.
